Crafting Income, Preserving Culture Grant Project

In January 2026, FOC donated $1,500 to current Peace Corps volunteer Nolan Carson for a grant project that would support women and youth to reclaim their pottery traditions and embark on entrepreneurial endeavors. Here is a recent update on the project from Nolan:

In the foothills of the Colombian Andes, a new local industry is beginning to take shape thanks to your support. La Escuela de Cerámica de Oiba is now in operation, with more than 25 students attending weekly classes to develop their artistic skills and learn  a valuable, income-generating trade.

Thanks to funds raised through the Peace Corps Partnership Program, we have revitalized a previously vacant building and transformed it into a vibrant ceramics workshop. The space now features a new roof, painted murals, and essential equipment, creating a welcoming environment for learning and creativity. Supported by the local government and Peace Corps, the school is open to participants of all ages and skill levels.

We have moved from rudimentary classes with limited materials to a fully functional studio. The seed has been planted for a local ceramics industry, and students are now in the early stages of discussing the formation of a foundation. With the school established, the students aim to create a formal organization capable of accessing future funding and supporting the sale of their work.
